Friends of Minehead Station run out of space

Readers Halt on the move

The success of the Book Stall on Minehead station which raises money for ongoing improvements relies on the generosity of local people donating their unwanted books as well as the hard work of the FOMS staff who run the stall during the West Somerset Railway’s operating season. However, due to the major work being undertaken at Minehead station installing a turntable, storage space for “stock” is very much at a premium.

Frances Bristow, FOMS retail manager, said “We will need new stock for the 2008 season but would ask that all contributors store their donations until we get some storage space built on the platform.  This is not likely to be ready until next February at the earliest. Even then, I would ask donators telephone the railway station (01643 704996) before they bring us their much needed books.”

Meanwhile the work on the turntable together with much other work continues apace and the railway station is noticing an increase in the number of visitors coming to see how the work is progressing.  Paul Conibeare, the railway’s General Manager said “There are two ideal viewing areas on our platform for people to come and see the exciting developments not only for the railway but also for Minehead and West Somerset.  We are open 7 days a week and will make viewers most welcome”

West Somerset Railway 2008 Gala Events
2006 Spring Steam Gala Doubled Headed Train

THE West Somerset Railway is delighted to confirm details of its programme of principal gala events for 2008:-

Spring Steam Gala
Sat-Sun 8-9 & Thu-Sun 13-16 March 08
Mixed Traffic Weekend
Fri-Sun 13-15 June 08
Autumn Steam Gala
Thu-Sun 2-5 October 08
Somerset in Autumn
Sat-Sun 25-26 October 08
Winter Steam Festival
Sun-Mon 28-29 December 08

The 2008 programme kicks-off with the traditional and extremely popular Spring Steam Gala which will again be a six-day event, but next year will be held a little earlier than usual due to Easter also falling in March. The theme has already been confirmed as “British Railways Steam 1948-68” and will seek to tell the story of how the newly nationalised railways eliminated steam in the space of just twenty years, enabling a good variety of engines and train types from across all the former regions of BR to feature.
At least twelve steam locomotives, including many visitors, are expected to be in action at the Spring Steam Gala and, subject to final confirmation, the return of two very popular engines has already been agreed – SR ‘West Country’ 4-6-2 No 34007 Wadebridge and GWR ‘4575’ Class 2-6-2T No 5542.
The Mixed Traffic Weekend, introduced for the first time in 2007, will largely feature heritage diesel traction – again with a number of ‘guest’ locomotives – and it is hoped will see the welcome return of two former British Railways Western Region diesel hydraulics from the Diesel & Electric Preservation Group’s impressive fleet – ‘Western’ No D1010 Western Campaigner and ‘Hymek’ No D7017 – following engine repairs.
The month of October will see the welcome return of two popular gala events – the very popular Autumn Steam Gala in its traditional ‘slot’ over the first full weekend in October, which will again feature an impressive line-up of engines, and Somerset in Autumn, a ‘mixed traction’ event which is deliberately timed to coincide with the school half term and promises an excellent opportunity to ride behind our wonderful fleet of steam and heritage diesel locomotives.
The programme concludes with the Winter Steam Festival which, for the first time, has been extended to two days. A varied collection of steam locomotives will work a full timetable of trains, recreating the West Country railway scene of a bygone era.
Comprehensive information about each gala above will be published at least six weeks in advance of the date of each event, both in a colour leaflet and on this website.
A special timetable and special fares will be in operation at the Spring Steam Gala, Mixed Traffic Weekend, Autumn Steam Gala, Somerset in Autumn and Winter Steam Festival events. Undoubtedly the best way to enjoy all these galas is to purchase a Rover Ticket, which gives complete freedom to travel on the line for the duration of the ticket, and can often be purchased at a discounted price in advance.
Looking even further ahead, the 2009 Spring Steam Gala is, subject to final confirmation, expected to return to its traditional slot at the end of March and will be held on 21-22 and 26-29 March 2009.
“We have a very impressive programme of gala events planned for next year,” comments Richard Jones, Chairman of the WSR Special Events Planning Team, “which – together with our other popular events such as the WSRA Steam Fayre & Vintage Vehicle Rally and the CAMRA Real Ale Festival at Minehead – will we hope will prove very popular, with plenty on offer to suit all tastes and interests. We very much look forward to welcoming people to the West Somerset Railway in 2008.”

WINTER STEAM FESTIVAL TO ROUND OFF RECORD BREAKING YEAR FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY
Winter Trains
The Winter Steam Festival on Saturday 29 December - the last steam gala of the year - is the undoubted highlight of the period between Christmas and New Year on the award-winning West Somerset Railway.   Steam trains operate every day between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead from 27 December to 02 January, but the Winter Steam Festival promises an absolute feast of steam working an interesting and varied timetable throughout the day.

Five engines will be in action on the Winter Steam Festival. The Great Western tradition will be represented by heavy freight locomotive number 3850, “Small Prairie” tank engine 5553 and the “Auto Tank” number 1450. The last named will be working an “auto train” push and pull service of two coaches, as was once typical of West Country branch lines, whilst its bigger brethren haul the longer trains. Somerset and Dorset number 88 will also be working trains over the full length of the line whilst the tiny London, Brighton and South Coast Railway number 662 “Martello”, which dates from 1875, will be working trains between Minehead and Blue Anchor. The Winter Steam Festival will be “Martello’s” last outing on the WSR before returning to its home at the Bressingham Museum in East Anglia.
Apart form the train rides visitors to the Winter Steam Festival will be able to call in at the Taunton Model Railway Group’s headquarters at Bishops Lydeard, the Museums at Washford and Bishops Lydeard and the Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton.
West Somerset Railway General Manager Paul Conibeare commented: “We have had an excellent 2007 season and passenger figures will comfortably beat our previous record, set in 2005. We expect to end somewhere around the 210,000 mark and the period of operation between December 27th and January 2nd is a nice little finish to the year with the Festival giving a day out for enthusiasts and families who are missing WSR Gala days. Our staff will be putting in extra hours to make sure trains are warm and of course if visitors want a breath of fresh air after Christmas our stations offer plenty of chances to go exploring”.
He continued: - “After January 2nd we have a brief “closed” period until February and the train services for half-term, which for the first time will operate over the whole length of the line.  However during those few weeks everyone will be very busy on engineering, maintenance and commercial activities as we prepare for another busy season. Our 2008 timetable is available now and can be obtained by ringing 01643 704996. We would like to wish all our passengers and visitors a Happy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming them back to the West Somerset Railway.”
Visitors to the Winter Steam Festival will be able to use a free bus link between Taunton Railway Station, Taunton town centre, silk Mills Park and Ride and Bishops Lydeard Station. Car parking at Bishops Lydeard is free and unusually for a Gala standard fares apply.

No “Sunsets” on West Somerset Railway in 2008
The Sunset over North Hill, Minehead

Whilst passenger numbers on the West Somerset Railway have continued to rise year after year, one regular train during the summer period has seen numbers drop dramatically.  The Sunset Specials that have run for many years on Wednesday evenings back and forth from Minehead to Blue Anchor during the high summer period no longer carry sufficient passengers to make them commercially viable.

Following an examination of passenger numbers for the last two seasons, the Railway has announced that the Sunset Specials will not feature in their 2008 planning. Martyn Snell, the Railway’s Commercial Manager said “It is a great pity that numbers on this particular service have dropped as they have.   We have to be realistic particularly bearing in mind how much time we ask our staff to give to all our train services.  We have identified one that is not working well and have decided to stop it.  Who knows, it may return in a slightly different guise but certainly not during 2008”

AT LEAST FIVE IN STEAM AT LAST GALA OF THE SEASON

1450 at Crowcombe Heathfield

1450 and Autocoach 178 at Crowcombe Heathfield Picture by Don Bishop

AT least five steam locomotives will be in action at the West Somerset Railway’s final special event of this season – the WINTER STEAM FESTIVAL on Saturday 29 December 2007.

Two guest engines will be in use during the event, the diminutive LB&SCR ‘Terrier’ 0-6-0T No 662 Martello – normally resident at the Bressingham Steam Museum in Norfolk – and GWR 0-4-2T No 1450.

Both engines have been based on the line since October and have proved very popular from visitors, and the gala will be the last opportunity to see Martello in service on the WSR.

The remaining engines in action will be selected from the resident fleet, comprising S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 No 88, LMS 4F   0-6-0 No 44422, the WSR’s own Great Western ‘Mogul’ No 9351, GWR 2-8-0 No 3850 and the pair of GWR ‘prairie tanks’, Nos 4160 and 5553.

An interesting and varied timetable will be in operation at the event – featuring over 300 miles of steam – with passenger services running between 09:20 and 18:20.    All services will be steam-hauled and there will be many opportunities for visitors to “swap trains” at the intermediate crossing places at Blue Anchor, Williton and Crowcombe Heathfield in order to sample travel behind all the locomotives in action during the day.

As well as the “whole line” trains operating between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, the timetable will also feature the Railway’s Great Western auto train – with No 1450 working with trailer 178 – and a typical branch line train with a Southern flavour worked by No 662 Martello – a steam veteran, having been built in 1875 – which will work a number of services between Minehead and Blue Anchor.

Full bar and buffet facilities will be available on most train services during the weekend, serving a good range of high quality hot and cold food, tea and coffee, and a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – including real ale.

There will be a number of additional attractions at the event.   The Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard and the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust’s museum at Washford will both be open, as will the base of the Taunton Model Railway Group at Bishops Lydeard.   For visitors also interested in more modern traction, the excellent Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton will also be open.

For the first time at the Winter Steam Festival, a special regular free bus service will operate linking Taunton Railway Station, the Park and Ride Car Park at Silk Mill – where plenty of car parking is available – and Bishops Lydeard Station.

For visitors arriving by car, both Bishops Lydeard – where limited car parking will be available – and the Silk Mill Park and Ride car park will be fully signposted from Junctions 25 and 26 of the M5 motorway.

A special souvenir programme – which will include full information about the event, together with the full working timetable and locomotive & coaching set diagrams – will be available in advance of the event and during the Gala itself, priced £2.00.

Undoubtedly the best way to enjoy the Winter Steam Festival is to purchase a Rover Ticket, which gives complete freedom to travel on the line for the day.   For the first time at this event, standard fare rover tickets (rather than special event fares) will apply.   An Adult Day Rover ticket, for example, will cost just £13 – a real bargain considering the number of locomotives and timetable ‘on offer’.   Senior, child and family rover tickets are also available.    Tickets can be purchased by telephone from Minehead Station and through www.ticketweb.co.uk, using a Credit/Debit Card.

“Our Winter Steam Festival has always been well received since it was introduced to our special event calendar four years ago,” comments Richard Jones, Chairman of the WSR Special Event Planning Team, “and we hope the opportunity to enjoy a variety of steam engines and trains working an impressive timetable, together with the comfort of warm, steam-heated trains, and all for the price of a standard fare rover ticket will again prove attractive to visitors.”

WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY STEAMING STRONGLY TOWARDS RECORD YEAR
5553 and Admirers at Blue Anchor Station

The 20 mile long West Somerset Railway is heading towards another record-breaking year as its main 2007 operating season ends and its volunteers and staff prepare for the annual programme of festive season trains in December.

“At the end of October we had carried 200,000 passengers in the year to date”, said West Somerset Railway General Manager Paul Conibeare,

“and had already welcomed more people to our trains than we did in the whole of 2006. We are also only 3000 short of our all time record total set in 2005 with the December trains still to run, reflecting another terrific effort by everyone on the WSR in attracting business to the railway and the area and then offering a good day out that persuades passengers to come back again”.
Mr Conibeare continued. “The months ahead will be very busy for everyone on the line. We do not run any regular passenger train services for the rest of November but we are busy with bookings for our pre-Christmas Santa Trains and work continues with the Minehead turntable preparation work, the construction of the Norton Fitzwarren turning triangle, locomotive and carriage maintenance and much else besides.  We always get a lot of quiet amusement when people ask us “what do you do all day when the trains aren’t running?”  Our 2008 timetables are due from the printers in mid-November and once they are to hand mailings to coach and holiday companies will begin as we continue to try to build our success story for the years to come”.

Urgent Santa required
Santa and Friend

Due to unforeseen sickness, the WSR is looking with some urgency for a member of staff to undertake the Santa duties on the upcoming Santa Expresses.  These run at 10.10, 12.20 and 14.35 on the following days:

Sunday 9th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, Saturday 22nd, Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th December.

There will be a need for the “Santa” to be willing to be CRB checked. Volunteering will not mean having to do every day although it would be easier to do the three trains on any day volunteered for.

SECOND SPECIAL EVENT WEEKEND IN OCTOBER FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY
Matello at Minehead
After holding a very successful “Autumn Steam Gala” at the start of October the West Somerset Railway will be offering a mixture of steam and vintage diesel hauled trains for its “Somerset in Autumn” weekend of October 27th and 28th. Three of the steam locomotives will be “guests” from other lines namely “Stanier Mogul” 42968 from the Severn Valley,

the tiny London, Brighton and South Coast Railway “Martello” which dates from 1880 and is on hire from the  Bressingham Museum in Norfolk whilst Great Western tank engine 1450 will once again recreate the lost branch lines of the West of England with its “auto-train” coaches.

Six steam engines currently resident on the WSR will also see service, five being of Great Western origin and two, numbers 88 and 44422, which saw service on the much-missed Somerset and Dorset line. The diesel engines will come from the fleet of 1960’s machines lovingly cared for by the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group. These will include Class 47 D1661 “North Star” which was added to the Williton line-up earlier this year.

Apart from an intensive train service between Bishops Lydeard (four miles from Taunton) and Minehead which will run between 09.10 and 18.30 on each day visitors will find plenty to do and see. Once more a free vintage bus service will link Dunster Station and the village whilst the Museums along the line and the Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton will be open to the public. For those who would like to leave the car at home Cooks Coaches are running a free bus service from Taunton Railway Station (under the bridge, near the Booking Office), Taunton Castle Green in the town centre and the Silk Mills Park and Ride Scheme on both days starting at 09.30 and at half-hourly intervals thereafter.

The Railway’s shops will be open for those who would like to do some pre-Christmas shopping.

“We have deliberately timed the Somerset in Autumn event for the half-term holidays”, said WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare, “and also for the weekend when the clocks go back to give visitors another chance to see both an interesting collection of engines at work and the beauties of the Somerset countryside from the comfort of our trains. Our main season ends on November 1st and then we will be hard at work on maintenance and more planning for 2008 in the gap before our “Santa Trains” start on December 1st”.

BEST EVER AUTUMN STEAM GALA

3440 City of Truro

OVER 6,300 passengers – a new record for the event – enjoyed a fabulous four day feast of steam at the West Somerset Railway’s recent Autumn Steam Gala, which was held over the weekend of 4-7 October.
The event broke all previous records for the number of passengers carried, with visitors travelling from far and wide, and was blessed with excellent weather.

No less than thirteen steam locomotives were in action during the Autumn Gala – including six ‘guest’ engines – representing three of the four former “Big Four” railway companies, the Great Western, Southern and London Midland & Scottish.    These ranged from the diminutive London Brighton & South Coast Railway ‘Terrier’ Martello – built in 1875 – to the world record breaking icon City of Truro, and included the unique LMS ‘Stanier Mogul’ No 42968 and a trio of former GWR heavy freight locomotives.

An intensive timetable gave visitors plenty of opportunities to travel behind and photograph the various locomotives, with the Great Western auto and Southern local passenger trains proving particularly popular.

A large number of those who visited on the Saturday and Sunday took the opportunity to arrive by train, courtesy of a Virgin Trains Voyager unit which ran a shuttle service between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard on both days.

“We had an excellent array of engines in action,” comments WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare “with many people telling us that they just did not have enough time to do everything they wanted to do!”

The WSR is very grateful to everyone concerned for making the event such a resounding success, including the owners of the various visiting engines, which drew many admiring comments from visitors and staff alike.

Three of the visiting engines – the ‘Terrier’ Martello, and Nos 42968 and 1450 – will be staying on the railway to take part in the West Somerset Railway’s next special event, the ‘Somerset in Autumn’ gala over the weekend of 27-28 October.   This event will also feature many of the line’s resident steam fleet plus four main line heritage diesels from the fleet lovingly maintained by the Diesel & Electric Preservation Group at Williton.

AUSTRALIAN BOOKING FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY “SANTA” TRAINS
The Santa Special Train in the Snow at Crowcombe
The station staff at Minehead on the West Somerset Railway has been taking bookings for the “Santa Special” and “Santa Express” trains for the last three months but the morning of Saturday 13th October brought a call from a longer distance than most. WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare takes up the story:  “A call to book a “Santa” around 11.00 in the morning is part of a normal autumn day at Minehead”, he said,

“but allowing for the time difference the call from Mr Warren Finnen was among  the more unusual ones we have received this year. It seems that Mr Finnen and his family will be on holiday in Britain in late autumn and one of the things on their list of “must do’s” was a ride on the West Somerset Railway. We are not operating regular services over the whole of the line on December 1st but we hope that the Finnens will enjoy the ride on the 10.40 “Santa Special” between Bishops Lydeard and Crowcombe Heathfield and their visit to Santa in his grotto at Crowcombe Heathfield station”.

Overseas visitors for WSR December trains are not entirely unknown. “We have carried Japanese visitors to Dunster By Candlelight in the past”, Mr Conibeare said, “and we know of a family from Zimbabwe who came to our second Winter Steam Festival in the week after Christmas three years ago. We always hope that these visitors enjoy their time in the West of England and go home and spread the word to their friends”.

SOMERSET IN AUTUMN: OUR END OF OCTOBER SPECIAL WEEKEND
Class 47 North Star at Minehead which will feature at the Somerset in Autumn Event

Somerset in Autumn is an opportunity for both enthusiasts and the wider public to get out and about and enjoy the Autumn colours and a mixture of steam and vintage diesel locomotives in action. Locomotives first. The line-up includes three “guests” in the form of “Stanier Mogul” 42968, “Terrier 662 “Martello” from Bressingham and Mike Little’s Great Western tank engine 1450.

The other steam engines available are Great Western designs in the form of numbers 3850, 4160, 5553 and 9351 plus two with Somerset and Dorset line connections, numbers 88 and 44422. Four vintage diesel engines from the Williton fleet will also see action. D1661 “North Star”, D6566, D7523 and D9526. Please note that not every engine will be working on each day.

Apart from an intensive timetable of trains between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead there will be other attractions including steam trains running to Norton Fitzwarren where it will be possible to see part of the work going ahead on the new turning triangle and the heritage goods train will be out and about.

In a new venture there is a Special Train leaving Minehead at 18.45, calling at Blue Anchor, Washord, Watchet and Williton in both directions to pick up or set down as required. It will start its return journey from Bishops Lydeard at 20.45. A Fish and Chip Supper will be served on the up journey from Minehead but this must be booked in advance by October 22nd at a cost of £7. The train will have a bar and buffet on it and planned haulage is by 42968. A nice way to mark the night when “Summer Time” ends and the clocks come back by an hour. The Murder Mystery Train will also be running from Bishops Lydeard but this has already sold out.

Away from the trains there will be the usual array of things to see and visit. The Museums at Bishops Lydeard, Blue Anchor and Washford will have their doors open as will the Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton.. Also at Bishops Lydeard visitors will have another chance to admire the skills of the Taunton Model Railway Group in their base.

There will be free shuttle bus service from Taunton Railway Station and Taunton Town Centre on both days starting at 9.30 a.m. At the Railway Station you leave the station at the booking office, turn left and go under the railway bridge where you will find markings on the road surface. In the town centre the stop is at Castle Green, the stands opposite the Bingo Hall with the Winchester Arms on your right. The bus link is by Cooks Coaches. In addition First service 28 gives half hourly link from 0705 in the morning. They run from the bus station and pick up at the special stop off the down platform (2) at Taunton Station.

Rover Tickets can be purchased at discount rates up to and including 22nd October (see the Somerset in Autumn Pages for more details).

NEW VOLUNTEERS DAY AS WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY LOOKS TO BUILD ITS BUSINESS FOR THE FUTURE
Volunteer Driver, Guard, Ticket Inspector and Buffet Attendant
The West Somerset Railway is holding another New Volunteers Day on Sunday October 14th as the 20 mile long “heritage” line between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead looks towards further expansion of its business in the future. “We have just had an excellent Autumn Gala Weekend”, said WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare,

“and we are in line for a record-breaking year overall but none of this would be possible without the tremendous input to the business by our excellent volunteer workforce. We have vacancies in all departments from the starting grades for those who wish to work with locomotives or in signalling through to the personal contact jobs such as booking clerks, station staff and buffet car workers.  The Railway has an established reputation for the friendliness and professionalism of its workers but we are a friendly bunch and have thirty years of on the job training experience.”
The day will begin in the Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard at 11.00 a.m. and will end at 5.00 p.m. The day will introduce those interested in working on the WSR to railway work, and how to get started and will also incorporate a round trip by steam train to Minehead during which members of the Railway will introduce themselves and explain what tasks and work are available.
More information about the New Volunteers Day can be obtained by ringing the West Somerset Railway Association on 01823 433856.

City of Truro for Autumn Steam Gala
City of Truro

With just over a week to go and the last day for advance ticket bookings being next Monday (October 1st) there is just good time to update you with developments for the Autumn Steam Gala between October 4th and 7th. The big news is the addition to the list of guest engines of two Great Western locomotives.

The first is a welcome return to the Edwardian elegance of 3440 “City of Truro” which will operate “solo” on 5 coach trains on Thursday 4th and double-headed on the other three days. The other is the WSR debut of some heavy freight muscle in the form of 3802 from the Llangollen Railway.

Stanier Mogul 42968 is due to join us from the Severn Valley and another engine making its debut between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead is GWR 0-6-2T 6619. Two contrasting small tank engines are also on the guest list. LBSCR “Terrier” 662 “Martello” will be on passenger duties between Minehead and Blue Anchor on Thursday and Friday whilst GWR 1450 will be in action with two auto-trailers in another WSR first.  To which loco line-up there are permutations from the 2007 resident fleet of SDJR 88, 4F 44422, & GWR locos 3850, 4160, 5553 and 9351. And last but not least the Peckett 0-4-0ST “Kilmersdon” will be shunting at Washford on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

For those who would like to get away from the hubbub of the main days of the Gala Saturday and Sunday will see a vintage bus from the Quantock Heritage Fleet running between Dunster Village and the Station. WSR passengers can obtain a 25% discount on admission to Dunster Castle by showing their WSR tickets at the entrance. Alternatively Sunday October 7th gives the opportunity to travel on the 10.05 from Minehead as part of the last visit by the bus link to Hestercombe Gardens for this year (see separate section of this website for information)

The Museums at Bishops Lydeard, Washford and Blue Anchor Stations will be open.

Anyone who would like to look behind the scenes Minehead Shed will be open on Saturday and Sunday between 10.00 a.m. and 5 p.m.for an admission charge of £1. At Williton there is the chance to see around the engineering base of the West Somerset Railway Association , “Braunton”, the workshops and Heritage Centre of the DEPG and work going ahead on the restoration of Great Western carriages.

For those interested in Model Railways the chance to visit the Taunton Model Railway Group’s base at Bishops Lydeard (small separate admission charge) should not be missed  whilst the well-known firm “Mainly Trains” is having a sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at its store at South Road Workshops in Watchet.

There are Art Exhibitions at both Bishops Lydeard and Minehead Stations and authors Richard Derry and Alan Hammond will be book-signing at Blue Anchor and Minehead respectively.

The Quantock Belle Dining Car will be offering a hot meals service as follows:-

Friday on the 10.10 and 2.30 from Bishops Lydeard and the 12.45 and 4.15 from Minehead.

Saturday and Sunday on the 10.10 and 2.25 from Bishops Lydeard and 12.30 and 16.10 from Minehead.

Work at Norton Fitzwarren on the triangle will be viewable from the auto-train at times during the Gala and also from the Virgin Voyager train as its shuttles between Bishops Lydeard and Taunton.

DISAPPOINTMENT OVER “BRAUNTON”…
…BUT ‘STANIER MOGUL’ CONFIRMED
Stanier Mogul

IT IS with both regret and disappointment that Southern Railway ‘West Country’ 4-6-2 No 34046 Braunton will not now be able to take any part in the West Somerset Railway’s Autumn Steam Gala on 4-7 October following problems encountered during its initial test run along the line last month. However, the Railway is delighted to be able to confirm that -

Following agreement reached with both the Severn Valley Railway and the Stanier Mogul Fund – LMS 2-6-0 No 42968 will be joining the line-up at the Autumn Gala.
“The ‘Stanier Mogul’ – which will be visiting Somerset for the first time – will be an impressive sight on the line and is sure to be popular with visitors to the event”, comments WSR General Manager, Paul Conibeare “and we are all looking forward to seeing this unique engine in action.”
No 42968 is the only preserved example of its class, forty of which were built by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway at Crewe Works in the mid-1930’s to a design by William Stanier, which were a development of the earlier mixed-traffic ‘Crab’ 2-6-0’s.   After a rather uneventful career, during which time it was based at various sheds, the loco was withdrawn from Wigan Springs Branch in January 1966 and sent to scrap at Woodhams Brothers’ yard at Barry Docks in South Wales.
The Stanier Mogul Fund successfully purchased the 2-6-0 in 1973, and it has been based on the Severn Valley Railway ever since.   After restoration from scrapyard condition, it was successfully steamed again in 1990 and entered passenger service the following year.
Other guest engines joining No 42968 at the Autumn Steam Gala will be GWR 56xx 0-6-2T No 6619 (normally based at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway), the diminutive LB&SCR ‘Terrier’ 0-6-0T No 662 Martello from Bressingham Steam Museum and the privately-owned GWR 0-4-2T No 1450, which is making a welcome return visit.   A further guest engine is currently being sourced.
Also in action from the resident fleet will be S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 No 88, LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44422, GWR 2-8-0 No 3850, the WSR’s own Great Western ‘Mogul’ No 9351 and a pair of GWR ‘prairie tanks’, Nos 4160 and 5553.
Completing the line-up will be Peckett 0-4-0ST No 1788 Kilmersdon – the last steam loco to work in a Somerset coalfield – which will be giving shunting demonstrations at Washford during the event.
Braunton had an initial test run on Sunday 19 August, after passenger services had finished for the day, working from its restoration base at Williton up the six-mile climb to Crowcombe.   Several stops were made en route to check bearings etc and generally all was well, particularly considering the fact that the engine had last steamed 42 years ago. On the return run, however, the smell of hot axleboxes was detected and these were checked upon arrival back at Williton.   Further examination revealed that three axleboxes had run hot, two having melted the white metal, which revealed a fault with the axlebox pads.   The motion was subsequently dismantled and the engine lifted off its wheels.
During examination a longitudinal crack was discovered in the left-hand trailing axle journal not previously apparent, and of such a depth that a new axle is now required to ensure main line certification.   The crack did not cause the overheating, but was exposed by it, and is considered to have existed in the axle since it was originally forged.   The cause of the overheating boxes may be inadequate lubrication, the cause of which is still under investigation.
As a result, No 34046 will now not be able to make its preservation debut at the Autumn Steam Gala, and it is expected that the engine will not be back in action until early 2008.
“We are naturally all very disappointed to hear of the problems encountered by Braunton – none more so than the restoration team at Williton – but we are looking forward to seeing the loco back in action next spring all being well, reports Paul Conibeare.   “However, we still have an excellent line-up of locomotives on offer at our Autumn Steam Gala, with the added attraction of a surprise guest engine, which we hope will again be very well supported.”
A very intensive timetable will be in operation on all four days of the event, with passenger services running between 08:20 (09:00 Thursday & Friday) and around 19:00 each day.    All services will be worked by steam and there will be many opportunities for visitors to “swap trains” at the intermediate crossing places at Blue Anchor, Williton and Crowcombe Heathfield in order to sample travel behind all the locomotives in action each day.
As well as the “whole line” trains operating between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, the timetable will also feature the Great Western auto train hauled by No 1450, a typical branch line train with a Southern flavour worked by No 662 Martello and the Railway’s demonstration heritage goods train.
Full bar and buffet facilities will be available on most train services during the weekend, serving a good range of high quality hot and cold food, tea and coffee, and a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – including real ale.   In addition, the “Quantock Belle” will be serving its customary popular range of all day breakfasts, together with a range of other hot meals, on selected trains on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors will be able to inspect the main workshops at Minehead – where the overhaul of BR(W) 4-6-0 No 7828 Odney Manor is taking place – together with the chance to see the engineering workshops at Williton, where Braunton will now be on display, together with GWR 0-6-0PT No 6412 – now awaiting a ten-year overhaul – and GWR 0-6-2T No 6695 from Swanage, which will be undergoing a contract repair.   For visitors also interested in more modern traction, the excellent Diesel Heritage Centre at Williton will also be open.    Also not to be missed will be the railway museums at Bishops Lydeard, Washford and Blue Anchor, together with the chance to see the layouts of the Taunton Model Railway Group in action at Bishops Lydeard.
Visitors to the Gala will again have the opportunity of travelling to and from the event by train, as one of Virgin Trains’ Class 220 Voyagers will be operating a special connecting shuttle service between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard on the Saturday and Sunday.    Special fares apply on these services.
In addition, a special regular free bus service will operate linking Taunton Railway Station, the Park and Ride Car Park at Silk Mill – where plenty of car parking is available – and Bishops Lydeard Station.
For visitors arriving by car, both Bishops Lydeard – where limited car parking will be available – and the Silk Mill Park and Ride car park will be fully signposted from Junctions 25 and 26 of the M5 motorway.
A special souvenir programme – which will include full information about the event, together with the full working timetables and locomotive diagrams – will be available in advance of the event and during the Gala itself, priced £2.50.
Undoubtedly the best way to enjoy the Autumn Steam Gala is to purchase a Rover Ticket, which gives complete freedom to travel on the line for the validity of the ticket.   Discounted prices apply for all ‘Rovers’ purchased in advance of the event (before 01 October) – Adult tickets, for example, cost £17, £26 and £35 for one, two and four days respectively.    Tickets can be purchased by telephone from Minehead Station and through www.ticketweb.co.uk, using a Credit/Debit Card.

Taunton Area Group Meeting
Small Prairie on the Minehead Branch in GWR Days

In just under a week's time (Monday 1st October) the Taunton Area Group of the West Somerset Railway Association will be holding its second meeting of the autumn, at the usual venue (GWRSA 'Snug' Bar, North East corner of Taunton Station).  This will be the annual screening of Mainline Steam Videos by PSOV. This is usually a rather dramatic display by a well-equipped team

of some superb mainline action, for which they always seem to be able to find some superb locations and excellent light. The evening is due to start at about 7.45 pm.  I need to ask those attending to be generous in donations at the end of the evening, please, to offset the charge that PSOV make, which is higher than the expenses usually expected by our speakers.  As usual, there will be a good variety of videos for sale.

The following meeting will be held on Monday 5th November to see some more of Peter Skelton's photographs in;  'Medium Format - Past and Present'.  Usual time and place.

NEW VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT BY WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY
Volunteers at Minehead
The West Somerset Railway is always looking for new volunteers in all of its various Departments as it seeks to expand its business and continue its continuing success story as both a premier “heritage railway” and principal visitor attraction in South West England.
With this in mind it is holding a New Volunteers’ Workshop at Bishops Lydeard Station on Sunday 9th September at 10.45 a.m.

The agenda will include a welcome and brief introduction to the role of volunteers on the Railway, and an Induction Course at the end of which the new volunteers will receive a letter of introduction to the Department or Section in which they wish to work. The Workshop will be complete by 1.00 p.m.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the WSR”, said Volunteer Co-ordinator Mark Smith,” and we have a range of jobs to suit all tastes and temperaments.  For the mechanically minded there are the Locomotive Department and the Signalling side which offers both hands-on “making it work on a daily basis” roles and maintenance and overhaul jobs, whilst for those who like meeting people there is plenty of work at our ten stations and in the buffet cars. We also always need guards, ticket inspectors and other on-train staff whilst track maintenance and vegetation control offers lots of good physical exercise in much more varied surroundings than the inside of a health club. Our youngest volunteers are the 13 year olds in their first years as “Trackers” and the upper age limit is only imposed by fitness and an ability to do the job”.
Intending new volunteers can find out more by contacting 01823 433856.

LARGEST SELECTION OF BEERS TO DATE AS SOMERSET REAL ALE FESTIVAL RETURNS TO MINEHEAD STATION
CAMRA 2007

For the eighth successive year the Somerset Branch of CAMRA (the Campaign For Real Ale) is holding its annual Beer Festival on the platform of Minehead Station on September 15th and 16th, with the largest amount of beer ordered in the Festival’s history to date.

There will be up to 100 real ales and several ciders

on sale, many of them from the award-winning small breweries of Somerset, such as Berrow, Butcombe, Cotleigh, Cottage, Dunkery, Exmoor, Glastonbury, Juwards, Milk Street, Moor, Newmans, Odcombe, RCH, Taunton and Yeovil. In addition there will be a wide selection of ales from all around the UK, showcasing the remarkable range of tastes and styles that British Traditional Brewing has to offer. There should be locally brewed special festival ale and a cask conditioned lager on sale while stocks last, plus some ciders, perry and wine. Soft drinks will also be on sale. A new development this year is a canvas covered drinking area on the platform to insure against a return of the weather of “summer” 2007.
The Festival is open from 11am to 11pm on Saturday 15th and midday to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday evening will feature music from the high-energy folk band “Bag of Rats” whilst Sunday lunchtime’s jazz will be from the Tone Valley Jazz Band, now in their 48th year and still very much going strong despite blowing their first notes when the modern-day WSR was still the Minehead branch of British Railways. The West Somerset Railway is running extra trains on the Saturday with the first departure from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead being at 9.35 in the morning and the last departure from Minehead being at 10.50 p.m. CAMRA members can obtain discounted travel over the whole of the line on production of a valid current CAMRA membership card.
West Somerset Railway General Manager Paul Conibeare said of the Festival: “I enjoy a good beer when I am out for an evening but I am always amazed by the sheer variety and quality which is produced locally and nationally and found on sale at the Festival. Our colleagues from CAMRA put in many hours of work in setting-up the event and then are on their feet serving large numbers of customers for a twelve hour day on the Saturday. Despite that the Real Ale Festival weekend always feels like one of the most relaxed special events that we host each year and bridges the gap between our peak month of August and the Autumn Steam Festival”.

West Somerset Railway – The Ticket to a Great Garden

The Permanent Way Gang at Folly Junction at the Bath and West Show

The Folly Junction Signal Box

The Track at Folly Junction

The Potting shed/Signal Box

The Alloment Garden

The WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY (WSR) has helped scoop another prestigious award……for Gardening!

Working with LANDART GARDEN DESIGN, the West Somerset Railway helped create the FOLLY JUNCTION garden for the 2007 National Amateur Gardening Show where it won a Gold Award.

The show garden was inspired by a weekend trip taken by Julian and Jane Compton on the West Somerset Railway. The garden, comprising a small signalbox, old track and borders, aims to conjure the romantic and nostalgic feelings associated with steam railways. It represents an old railway that has been partly taken over by nature but also partly cared for (by the retired signalman) as a small garden.

The signalbox has been converted into a potting shed and greenhouse displaying a colourful array of pelargoniums. The border in front of the signalbox is planted with a cottage garden feel and there is also a small kitchen garden in four oak raised beds. The rest of the garden and railway tracks are full of wild flowers and grasses.

The idea for the garden was the brainchild of Julian and Jane Compton of Landart Garden Design who had won two previous ‘Best in Show’ awards for gardens exhibited in 2005 and 2006. Realising that the railway aspects of their ‘dream’ garden were somewhat beyond their skills base, Landart approached the West Somerset Railway for assistance.
WSR’s General Manager enthusiastically embraced the project and immediately offered the full assistance of the railway. ‘I was quite taken by the idea of a railway garden and impressed by the enthusiasm of Julian and Jane for the project – I could see that it would be a winner’.

John Buxton, the WSR’s Chief Civil Engineer was equally enthused and mobilised the Permanent Way gang to locate the track and materials required including 30 foot of track plus a signal

gang to locate the track and materials required including 30 foot of track plus a signal. The Blue Anchor Station Master, Peter Trehearne, also located  milk churns, signs and the luggage.

John Bonner and Dave Dunster from the WSR’s Permanent Way gang  worked closely with Julian and Jane in the design and planning stage and helped assemble the garden at the Bath and West Showground.

Folly Junction Signal The Signal Box

The WSR’s permanent way gang were given leave to attend the show on the first day and were all extremely pleased to find that their garden had won a Gold Award. ‘This makes all my people’s work on this project so worthwhile’, said Chief Civil Engineer, John Buxton, ‘The whole gang are really chuffed about winning the award and its been a great team building exercise. The gang had a ‘celebratory lunch with Julian and Jane at which an entry to the prestigious Chelsea show was discussed’, he added.

Are we likely to see the West Somerset Railway with a new Landart Garden Design at Chelsea in the future?

“Watch this space,” smiled John enigmatically.

EXCELLENT BANK HOLIDAY RESULTS FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY

5553 at Blue Anchor

Small Prairie tank 5553 at Blue Anchor as people leave the train for the Seaside. Picture by Alan Meade

Along with many other attractions in South West England the West Somerset Railway had an excellent August Bank Holiday Weekend as holiday makers and day trippers took advantage of the sunshine to get out and about or to visit the seaside.

“We had every available coach in service over the three days”, said WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare, “and the flow of passengers coming for a day on the beach or to go exploring the countryside meant that we needed all the train seating we could muster.

When we added the figures together we had carried 4,357 passengers over the three days on the trains, which is an increase of 16% on last year, whilst our Bank Holiday vintage bus service between Dunster Station and the village carried 315 visitors on the Sunday and 273 on the Monday

The Bank Holiday passenger figures were our best for over five years and overall our August results seem to have mirrored the general pattern for the South West with matters improving as the month has gone on. And after the general pattern of the summer it was lovely to see passengers walking towards the trains with sand on their shoes rather than wrapped up in their waterproofs.”

“We are now looking ahead into what promises to be busy Autumn period”, Mr Conibeare continued. “We are running trains until the start of November and the programme of Special Events including the ever-popular CAMRA Somerset Real Ale Festival on September 15th and 16th and the Autumn Steam Gala which takes place between October 4th and 7th, bookings for which are already coming in.  There is also a diesel-hauled Excursion Train from Minehead to London and Canterbury at bargain fares on September 29th, operated by Hertfordshire Railtours.”

Crowds on the Bristol Trains

Getting off the Butlins Trains Butlins train Butlins Trains

Butlins train Butlins Trains butlins trains

The Butlins Trains to Bristol are getting busier. As the above pictures show crowds of people left the train at Minehead with their luggage for their stay at Butlins. After only four trains the take up of this new service is encouraging for the month of August and hopefully for an extended service in 2008. These trains are good for the local environment as it encourages people to use public transport and to leave the car at home. For more details of this service please click on the image below for how you to can travel on this train or, click the ticket web logo to purchase tickets.

VINTAGE BUS LINK TO RUN TO DUNSTER SHOW
AS SUCCESSFUL 2007 SEASON CONTINUES FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY

Dunster Station

Locomotive 88 at Dunster by Peter Darke

The West Somerset Railway will be running a vintage bus link on Friday August 17th from Dunster Station to offer visitors to the annual Dunster Show an opportunity to avoid the Show traffic on the road and to visit the popular Exmoor event by means of steam train and a bus from the fleet of Quantock Heritage Services.
“We have been running the bus for the Show for a number of years now”, said WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare,

“and it has become an established part of many visitor’s day out, giving them a chance to enjoy the views of the summer countryside as they travel to and from the event. We expect it to make another contribution to what has been a very good year for us to date”.Mr Conibeare reflected further on the year to date:- “We have had an excellent first seven months in terms of increasing passenger numbers and general expansion of the business.  The number of excursion trains operating to and from the WSR from the main line network via the improved junction at Norton Fitzwarren has grown considerably and the work on the turning triangle at Norton Fitzwarren and the Minehead turntable should enhance this still further in years to come. The next excursion will be a diesel hauled train from Minehead to Weymouth on August 26th, giving a traditional Bank Holiday seaside trip and looking further ahead we have a number of special events in the Autumn, including the Real Ale Festival on September 15th and 16th and our Autumn Steam Gala between October 4th and 7th. The Gala should see “West Country” class locomotive 34046 “Braunton” working trains for the first time since 1965 following a complete rebuilding in the engineering base at Williton. We are even beginning to get bookings for the Santa Special trains coming in”.

TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF RETURN TO STEAM OF SOMERSET AND DORSET RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVE

S & DJR 88 leaving Minehead on a Steam Enginemans Course

44422 on shed at Minehead

Two Locomotives which both worked on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway and both now pulling trains on the West Somerset Railway

August 19th will mark a special anniversary in the history of railway preservation in the West of England as it marks the 20th Anniversary of the return to steam of Somerset and Dorset “Class 7F” number 88.  The locomotive is owned by the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust and is a regular performer on train services over the twenty miles of the West Somerset Railway between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead.

Number 88 was built in 1925 as one of a class of 11 engines specially designed to work heavy mineral trains over the Somerset and Dorset line, particularly the heavily-graded section over the Mendip Hills, and for moving coal trains in and and out of the Somerset Coalfield around the Radstock area. However during the explosion in holiday traffic to the south coast during the 1940’s and 50’s the 7F’s power also saw them working Saturday holiday trains between Bath (Green Park) and Bournemouth (West) stations.

Although built for the Somerset and Dorset 88 became part of the LMS loco fleet as 13808 and finished her career in 1963 when, as British Railways number 53808 she was withdrawn from mainline service and was taken to the Barry Scrapyard in South Wales. From there she was purchased by the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust and initially taken to Radstock as part of the planned preservation scheme there. When this failed the S&DRT and its collection moved to Washford on the West Somerset Railway in 1975.  Restoration work continued but in 1985 the locomotive moved to the Minehead workshops of the WSR and it was in the yard there that the engine was steamed on August 19th 1987.

88 ran until 1996, covering around 50,000 miles at the head of West Somerset passenger trains before another overhaul was necessary. The engine is now painted in the famous “Prussian Blue” livery of the original S&D and is one of the most easily recognised engines on Britain’s steam railways.

Also in action on August 19th will be another engine with Somerset and Dorset connections. Number 44422 is a “4F” 0-6-0 engine, a survivor of a class that once numbered no less than 772 and could be found working freight and local passenger services all over the LMS and British Railways network. During the 1950’s 44422 was allocated to Templecombe locomotive shed and was a familiar sight along the Bath – Bournemouth line and also on the branch line from Evercreech Junction to Highbridge and Burnham on Sea. The 4F is on hire as a summer “guest” on the WSR.

Visitors to the WSR on August 19th will also find the Washford Museum open and author Alan Hammond will be signing copies of his Somerset and Dorset books in the station shop at Minehead.

Commenting on the day WSR General Manager Paul Conibeare said “88 is a valuable engine for the WSR and its power has been an asset in moving our heaviest trains during the last twenty years.  Together with 44422 they bring some variety to our generally Great Western designed fleet and this is popular with both our footplate crews and the travelling public”.

West Somerset Railway Association Steam Fayre and Vintage Vehicle Rally is sadly cancelled
rally

This years Steam Fayre and Vintage Vehicle Rally on the 4th and 5th of August has been Cancelled due to the rally field being waterlogged. The Association were informed late last night (Sunday) that the field would be unsuitable for the usual fantastic array of vehicles and it was with sadness that Association Board have decided that the event will now not take place this year.

Don Bishop, WSRA Press Officer comments "This is due to the long periods of seemingly incessant rain making the site very wet and boggy and the obvious difficulties this would bring with getting vehicles on/off the site. The land owner was understandably not willing to allow the event to go ahead on his land
