Family Fun Weekend 2008

Thumbs up from Prfessor Popcorn Welcome to the first “Family Weekend”, our new summer event with plenty to see and do on or near the West Somerset Railway. We hope that you will enjoy your day out with us and if you book your tickets in advance you will be able to save money and enter a Treasure Hunt. Look out for things to see at each station along the line and you will have a chance to win a prize. The following can be done at each station.
  • Bishops Lydeard. Model Railway in the Gauge Museum
  • Stogumber: Picnic site at the station
  • Williton: A chance to visit the Diesel Heritage Centre of the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group and see some of their fleet of locomotives close-up. Conducted tours of the station and appearance by entertainer Colin John on the Sunday
  • Watchet: Craft displays on the station and the adjacent Boat Museum will have a demonstration of rope making. Explore the old town and its new Marina.
  • Washford: Shunting in the yard by “Kilmersdon”, the last steam engine to work in industry in Somerset. 10 minute walk to Cleeve Abbey, owned by English Heritage and where West Somerset Railway tickets holders can get discounted admission. Torre Cider Farm is 20 minutes walk from the station. There are 2 pubs and of course the station itself is home to the Museum of the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust’s Museum.
  • Blue Anchor: Stop off and enjoy a walk on the beach, perhaps doing some kite flying as well. (The Stationmaster will be selling kites if you want one).Small railway museum on the station.
  • Dunster: Alight here for a vintage bus trip from the station to the village and the Castle. Discounted admission for WSR tickets holders at the Castle where some special activities will also be going on. Explore the village with its Yarn Market, old Priory, packhorse bridge and shops.
  • Minehead: Three shows a day and a welcome from Professor Popcorn. Trips round the town by Vintage Bus and Steam Wagon. Short steam train rides from Minehead Station. Face painter, shop, refreshments

There will no admission charge to Minehead Station and normal fares will apply including Local Residents Cards, Shareholder Vouches and other Special Offers
