4561 was built by Swindon works in 1924 and allocated to Tyseley depot.
In September 1927, it moved to Ebbw Junction where it was employed hauling local passenger services in Wales.
In 1930 it moved to Devon to start an unbroken period of 32 years working on various lines around Devon and Cornwall.
In September 1938, 4561 was transferred to Truro, where it became a regular on the Falmouth branch, on the Truro to Newquay line and other stopping trains over the Cornish main line.
It was allocated to Newton Abbot in November 1958 and was often used working passenger and goods trains on the Brent to Kingsbridge branch. It moved to Laira in July 1961, working trains to Tavistock and Launceston before being withdrawn in May 1962.
This locomotive left Woodham Brothers in September 1975, after being purchased by the West Somerset Railway Association.
It is currently undergoing an extensive overhaul at Williton on the West Somerset Railway, having been out of service since 1998. In August 2007, the engine left Williton for static display at the Steam Museum at Swindon. 4561 returned to West Somerset in September 2008.
