The British Rail Class 03 locomotive was one of British Railways' most successful 0-6-0 diesel-mechanical shunters. 230 were built at Doncaster and Swindon works between 1957 and 1962.
Like other shunters of this size, the Class 03 was built for light duties where a larger locomotive was not needed, especially for shunting at locomotive and carriage depots and as station pilots, or where larger or heavier locomotives could not be used. The reduction over time in the demand for shunting locomotives meant that they were progressively withdrawn from 1968 onwards.
D2133 was built by British Railways at Swindon and entered service at Taunton in February 1960. It was transferred to Swindon in May 1966 but returned to Taunton in June that year. In July 1968 it was moved to Bristol. It was withdrawn in July 1969 and sold to British Cellophane to work at its factory in Bridgwater. The factory closed in 1994 and D2133 was donated to the West Somerset Railway.
The locomotive is usually based at Minehead.
