CLASS 52 "WESTERN" No. D1010 "WESTERN CAMPAIGNER"

D1010
Lee Robbins

D1010 was built by British Railways in 1962 at Swindon Works in maroon livery with a yellow buffer beam.

It was first allocated to Old Oak Common in October 1962 and then to Laira in January 1964.

In April 1966, it worked the Royal Train from Windsor to Cheltenham Racecourse Station for an overnight stop. HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip visited the Slimbridge Wild Fowl Trust the next day and returned to Windsor, again hauled by D1010.

It was reallocated to Landore in March 1968 and then back to Laira in January 1969.

It was withdrawn from service in February 1977, after completing 1,360,740 miles in British Rail service. In March, it moved to Newton Abbot and was stored in the old diesel depot.

In July 1977, it was sold to Foster Yeoman and moved to Merehead Quarry. The loco was painted into green livery with full yellow ends and was renamed as ‘Western Yeoman’, carrying the number ‘D1035’.

In the early 1990’s, it travelled to several Diesel Galas, including the West Somerset Railway, Paignton & Dartmouth and the Bodmin and Wenford Railway, as well as appearing at the Bristol Bath Road, Gloucester and Laira open days.

In January 1993, Foster Yeoman agreed to sell the loco to the DEPG who then replaced the name and number with the original ‘D1010’ and ‘Western Campaigner’ plates and painted the loco into British Railways blue with small yellow warning panels.
